On 05/29/2019 at about 8:15 PM, Officers were dispatched to 11th and Marine for a report of disturbance and possible stabbing. On arrival officers discovered a 39 year old Astoria man laying on the sidewalk, he was conscious and alert but had a single stab wound to the chest. The other male involved in the altercation, a 35 year old Astoria man remained at the scene. Based on witness accounts the men were engaged in some sort of a physical disturbance just prior to the stabbing. The man responsible for the stabbing had reportedly been assaulted by the stabbing victim. At this time there have been no arrests in the case pending further investigation.

The stabbing victim was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital for initial treatment. He was later transferred to Oregon Health Sciences University for further treatment.

Deputy Chief Eric Halverson said, “from what we’ve learned so far, it appears these men have had history of conflict with one another. We are continuing to investigate this situation and will be sending the case to the Clatsop County District Attorney’s Office for a charging decision.”

On 05/23/2019 at 11:13 PM Astoria Police and Fire Department were dispatched to a report of a vehicle versus bicycle crash at 31st and Marine. Passersby found a male subject and his bike in the middle of the West Bound lane. The man, a 41 year old homeless individual had a substantial head injury and an injury to his arm. The man was highly intoxicated and unwilling to provide information about what had occurred or who was responsible. Based on the investigation it was determined that the man had not been struck by a vehicle but is believed to have been assaulted.

On Thursday, March 14th, 2019 Clatsop County Search and Rescue conducted ground and water searches for missing person Maya Sanders but were unable to yield any additional discoveries.

The Clatsop County Search and Rescue Team has suspended the active ground search at this time, but does have plans to return to the area in the near future to conduct shore line searches.

The Clatsop County Marine Patrol will continue to operate in the area over the next couple of weeks.

Investigators will continue active follow up on any tips or leads that come in.  Anyone who has information is asked to contact the Astoria Police Department at 503-325-4411.

Astoria Police Department, the Clatsop County Search and Rescue Team and law enforcement partners are continuing their search for missing person Maya Sanders.

Several tips were received yesterday related to missing person, Maya Sanders.   One of those tips confirmed that she was seen on the North Tongue Point industrial area around 3:00 PM on Tuesday March 12, 2019. Investigators reviewed video from several cameras in the area. The footage indicated that Sanders was alone in the area. Footage revealed that she entered onto a pier walking north out of the camera frame. She is not seen returning to shore on the video after she entered the pier. A search and rescue dog was also deployed in the area and ended up tracking to the same location Sanders was last seen on video. The dog continued to the end of the pier and stopped. “Based on this information there is a strong probability that she went into the water”, said Deputy Police Chief Eric Halverson. Clatsop County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue was assisted in the area by a professional drone pilot whose equipment has heat seeking capabilities. The aerial survey revealed no clues for the Search and Rescue team to act upon. Clatsop County Search and Rescue’s dive team was requested to dive the area, commencing dive operations late yesterday afternoon and concluding around 7:00 PM without locating her. The Clatsop County Search and Rescue Team will be out this morning conducting further search efforts. The Clatsop County Dive Team will have equipment in the area conducting sonar searches. “We want to be open to all possibilities and ensure we’ve done all we can to locate Maya. Please keep Maya’s family and friends in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.”, Halverson said. Until she is located she will continue to be listed in a national database as a missing person.

On 12/30/2018 at 11:38 PM Astoria Police were dispatched to a report of a pedestrian versus vehicle crash in the 4000 block of Lief Erickson Dr.  Initial investigation indicates the pedestrian was standing in the middle of the Eastbound lane of travel and was reportedly wearing dark clothing.  The operator of the vehicle, 21 year old Allyn Bauer of Naselle, Washington and other witnesses stopped immediately and rendered aid.  The pedestrian identified as 28 year old Frankie McGuire of Astoria was unconscious at the scene and was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria.  He was later transferred to Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland Oregon where he was reported to be in stable condition with fractures to the leg and arm.  The operator of the vehicle is cooperating with authorities while the incident remains under investigation.

On 11/12/2018 at about 1:36 A.M. Astoria Police received a report that a man had just been robbed by two male subjects.  Officers contacted the victim and learned that he was walking in the area of 7th and Marine Dr. when he was approached by two male subjects.  One suspect engaged the victim in conversation,  initially asking for a cigarette and marijuana.  When the man told them he had neither. The second suspect pushed the man to the ground and took his wallet, removed an undisclosed amount of cash and threw the wallet to the ground.  No  weapons were used during the robbery.

Astoria Police were assisted at the scene by Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office’s K-9 unit but the suspects were not located.

The suspects are described as white males in their mid-twenties.  One suspect was wearing a blue “Levi” jacket with a white wool collar and a black baseball hat.  The other suspect was described as wearing a black jacket and had light colored hair with a crew cut. Both suspects fled South on 7th Street.

Astoria 9-1-1, in conjunction with Astoria Fire Department, Astoria Police Department and Medix Ambulance, would like to invite you to come visit us at the annual Trick or Treat Downtown Astoria on Wednesday the 31st. On 10/17/2017 at about 10:23 a.m. Ruben Martinez was located safe after walking up to a residence near mile post 7 on Highway 202. The property owner contacted authorities and Martinez was reunited with his family.  The Astoria Police Department wishes to thank the Clatsop County Search and Rescue team the Astoria and Warrenton Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) as well as members of the public who called in possible sightings, hung up fliers and offered assistance to locate Mr. Martinez.  “This is the way we like to see these situations end. Said Deputy Chief Eric Halverson, the concern and support shown by our community partners is what makes Astoria such a great place to live.”

On 10/16/2018 at about 7:13 PM Astoria Police received a report from family members, that 76 year old Ruben Rodriguez Martinez did not return to his residence in the 100 Block of Duane Street.  Mr. Martinez was last seen today near his residence at around 10:00 AM.  Mr. Martinez reportedly has early onset Alzheimer’s.   He has a history of walking around town and in Astoria neighborhoods then he returns home or is picked up by family.

Ruben Martinez is reported to be 6’00” tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds.  He was last seen wearing a hat with the Mexican flag on it, gray jacket, black jeans and black shoes.

Astoria Police Department is being assisted by the Clatsop County Search and Rescue Team.  Members of the Astoria Police Department and Clatsop County Search and Rescue members  with a search and rescue dog, searched into the early morning hours but so far have not located Mr. Martinez.  Searchers will re-convene at 8:00 AM to continue search efforts.

On  10/03/2018 at about 10:45 PM Astoria Police were contacted by an Astoria Port Security Officer advising that he had just had contact with a man who said he was wanted but if the police tried to arrest him it would end in a standoff.  An Astoria Officer arrived to make contact with the man near West Marine and Bay Street.  The man, later identified as 37 Year old Michael Douglas Hathaway reportedly concealed an object and refused to stop for the officer.  Hathaway then produced a dirk style knife and told the officer, he would have to shoot Hathaway to take him into custody.  Additional Officers from Astoria Police Department responded to assist with the apprehension of Hathaway who was given repeated commands, which were repeatedly refused, to drop the knife.  Officers continued to speak with Hathaway who after several minutes of negotiation, dropped the knife and allowed himself to be handcuffed.  Hathaway was initially transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital after telling officers he had just ingested heroin prior to being contacted by police.  Hathaway was treated, then lodged at the Clatsop County Jail on the Utah Felony Warrant, as well as on local charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon.
