On 02/10/2022 at 10:18 PM Astoria Police Department, Astoria Fire Department and Medix Ambulance responded to a report of a two vehicle motor vehicle crash on the Astoria Megler Bridge.  Based on preliminary investigation, a 2003 Mini Cooper operated by 62 year old Stephen Schemel of Chinook Washington, was reported to have been traveling Southbound on Highway 101 operating at a high rate of speed prior to crossing the centerline and hitting a 2000 Ford F250 truck.  Schemel who was not seat-belted, died at the scene.  The operator of the truck suffered minor injuries but was not transported.  Oregon State Police assisted at the scene with a traffic crash reconstructionist.
